A Lafayette teenager who claimed he shot a man burglarizing his home Thursday was arrested after investigators learned the two had been involved in an altercation earlier that day, police said Friday.

Dylan Etienne, 17, was booked Thursday on a count of aggravated second-degree battery in the shooting, which injured a man in the chest and back, Lafayette Police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.

Etienne and the victim had an argument early Thursday before the victim went to Etienne’s house in the 100 block of Webb Street to confront him, Mouton said. The victim tried to run away once Etienne brandished a pistol and fired multiple times, striking the victim twice, Mouton said.

Etienne originally told investigators the victim and other men were banging on his door, which led him to grab his pistol and shoot once they broke into the home, Mouton said.

The victim remains in stable condition at an area hospital, Mouton said. Etienne remained at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center Friday afternoon in lieu of $150,000 bail.

Man walking on La. 13 hit by pickup, killed

A pedestrian was killed early Friday after he was hit shortly before 5 a.m. by a pickup truck while walking along La. 13 in Evangeline Parish, State Police said.

Keith Stakes, 64, of Eunice, was walking on the highway north of La. 374 when he was hit by a 1996 Chevrolet Silverado driven by 46-year-old Billy Hubbard, of Ville Platte, State Police spokesman Brooks David said in a news release.

Stakes died at the hospital, David said. Hubbard and his passenger were seat belted and left the scene uninjured.

Hubbard submitted to a chemical test and was not impaired, David said. A toxicology sample was taken from Stakes and sent to the Louisiana State Police crime lab for analysis, David said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Lafayette man charged in Christmas Day killing

The Lafayette man accused of second-degree murder in the Dec. 25 shooting death of 23-year-old Wilbert Simon was charged Wednesday in 15th Judicial District Court.

Arraignment for 23-year-old Chesmond Paris is scheduled for Feb. 24.

Paris surrendered Dec. 27 in the shooting, but he was released from jail after now-retired District Judge Herman Clause reduced his bail from $250,000 to $25,000, according to court records.

In the Dec. 31 bail reduction request, Lafayette attorney Harold Register claims Paris is a cousin of Simon, who “had a reputation for violence” and “had killed someone before.”

“(Simon) acted as if he was going to pull a gun on (Paris),” who over-reacted and shot and killed Simon, Register wrote in the document.

A 21-year-old man was reportedly shot in the foot while trying to stop the argument between Paris and Simon, police said at the time.

Register also claims that Paris is a student athlete at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff and “has never been in trouble before.”

Abbeville fugitive booked on drug counts

An Abbeville man wanted on outstanding felony warrants was booked Thursday on multiple drug counts after he tried to flee from narcotics agents who spotted him on the road, authorities said.

Fabian Mitchell, 32, was arrested after agents found drugs, cash and a scale in his possession following the chase, which began on the roadway and ended on foot, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a Friday news release.

Agents familiar with Mitchell’s outstanding warrants spotted him driving a vehicle and attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Mitchell kept driving until he pulled onto the shoulder, got out and ran off, the Sheriff’s Office said.

He was soon apprehended and booked on possession of Lortab, Vyvanse, Promethazine and drug paraphernalia; possession with intent to distribute marijuana and synthetic marijuana; resisting arrest; and transactions involving drug proceeds. He was also booked on outstanding felony warrants for obstruction of justice, principal to possession with intent to distribute marijuana and possession of marijuana.

Mitchell remained in the Vermilion Parish jail Friday afternoon in lieu of $66,750 bail.

Man admits pawning stolen weapons

A homeless Ville Platte man is accused of pawning stolen weapons to fund his gambling addiction.

Jeremy Morales, 26, was booked Wednesday on felony theft and theft of firearms after he admitted stealing six guns and two compound bows from a Sunset man who was letting Morales stay at his home, said Sgt. Clay Higgins, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman.

The homeowner returned from an offshore job to find the weapons missing, which is when Morales confessed and attributed the crime to his gambling addiction, Higgins said.

Morales remained in the St. Landry Parish jail Friday afternoon in lieu of $27,500 bail.

Detectives are collecting the pawned weapons from an Opelousas pawn shop and from four pawn shops in Lafayette Parish, Higgins said.
