A Jeanerette man wearing dark clothing and walking in a roadway late Wednesday in Iberia Parish was struck by a vehicle and killed, State Police said.
The incident happened shortly after 11 p.m. on La. 31 south of La. 86. A State Police news release says Kim Fontenette, 50, of St. Martinville, was driving a 2007 Ford Taurus northbound on La. 31 when she struck Arthur Frederick, 44, who was walking in the northbound lane near the center line.
Frederick sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on scene by the Iberia Parish Coroner’s Office.
Fontenette and her 70-year-old passenger were wearing seat belts and were not injured, the news release says.
Routine toxicology samples were taken from Frederick and will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis to determine if he was impaired. Fontenette voluntarily submitted to a chemical test and no detectable signs of impairment were found, police said.
The crash remains under investigation.
