A Breaux Bridge man police said was at-fault in a three-vehicle crash that killed one motorcyclist and injured another committed suicide Saturday, Police Chief Brannon Decou said.

Jacob Romero, 21, was cited Friday night for failing to yield to oncoming traffic when he took a left turn and crashed a Volkswagen Beetle into two motorcyclists from New Iberia around 10 p.m., Decou said.

Toxicology results are pending to determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash, Decou said.

Scott Bonin, 34, and Ryan Maturin, 33, were both wearing helmets when they were ejected from their motorcycles in the crash, Decou said. Bonin succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Romero was seatbelted and uninjured when he reportedly took a left from the eastbound lane of Main Street onto South Girouard Road, Decou said. Bonin and Maturin were traveling the opposite direction on Main Street.

Abbeville shooting leads police to stolen guns

A man was hospitalized but no arrests were made in an early Saturday morning shooting near Oak and Hayes Streets that led police to seize six guns, four of them stolen, from a nearby home, authorities said.

Officers executing a search warrant of the home after the shooting also found spent bullet casings and marijuana there, according to a news release from the Abbeville Police Department.

Arrests related to the shooting and weapons seizure are expected to come soon, police said.

Officers were responding to a report of shots fired when they heard more gunfire and found the victim near the intersection, police said. The shooting victim was treated at an area hospital for his injuries.

Anyone with information on the shooting or the stolen weapons is asked to contact Sgt. Ryan Boutte at (337) 893-2511.

Arrest made in Lafayette home invasion

A New Iberia man wanted in a Wednesday home invasion in Lafayette was booked Sunday in the crime, police said.

Heath Christopher Boutte, 40, was booked Sunday on a count of home invasion and remained in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center Monday afternoon in lieu of a $50,000 bond, according to the Sheriff’s Office website.

Police are still looking for a second man in the home invasion, Lafayette Police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

Boutte is accused of forcing his way into a home in the 200 block of Dublin Circle around 5:30 a.m. and stealing the victim’s wallet and 2005 Jaguar, Mouton said.
