Authorities are now investigating the September death of a 54-year-old man on Dottie’s Lane as a homicide, the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday in a news release.

The autopsy findings on Jose A. Pineiro-Perez, completed Dec. 30, ruled his death as a homicide, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Traci Landry said.

The St. Mary Parish coroner, Dr. F.H. Metz Jr., was not available Wednesday to release information on the cause of the death.

The investigation remains ongoing.

New Iberia man booked on narcotics counts

A New Iberia man is accused of intending to sell the crack and synthetic marijuana found in his possession at an apartment complex on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, authorities said.

Lester Todd Collins, 28, was booked Tuesday on multiple counts after narcotics agents received a tip he was selling drugs in the apartment complex’s breezeway area, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office said in news release.

Agents found Collins in the breezeway, where they interviewed him before searching him and finding a handgun, cash, a large amount of synthetic marijuana and several rocks of crack-cocaine, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Collins was booked on one count each of possession with intent to distribute both crack-cocaine and synthetic marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, transactions involving drug proceeds and possession of a gun with an obliterated serial number.

He remained in the Vermilion Parish jail Wednesday afternoon in lieu of more than $70,000 bail.

House fire sparked by faulty heating unit

A heating unit ignited an early Wednesday morning fire at a home in the 1400 block of St. Mary Street, authorities said.

Firefighters arrived at the home at 3:33 a.m. and found all eight residents safe, Scott Fire Chief Chad Sonnier said in a news release. Using a thermal camera, firefighters located the fire’s origin at a heating unit inside an interior room, Sonnier said.

The home received minimal damage, Sonnier said.

Authorities seeking alleged deadbeat dad

Authorities are asking the public’s help in locating a Breaux Bridge man who owes tens of thousands of dollars in child support, the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Daniel Breaux, 42, owes more than $40,000 in unpaid child support, spokeswoman Maj. Ginny Higgins said.
