A 73-year-old woman was found dead in her home early Tuesday after a fire destroyed her house, the State Fire Marshal’s Office said.

Firefighters discovered Mary Ann Sam dead around 4 a.m. in her home in the 900 block of Montgomery Road after they arrived to battle a blaze that had engulfed her single-story, wood frame house, the Marshal’s Office said in a news release.

Preliminary findings by investigators determined the fire originated at the west end of the home, and Sam’s body was found in the northeast corner, the Marshal’s Office said. She was the only person living there.

The fire remains under investigation and an autopsy has been requested to determine the exact cause of death.
