Police: Man opens fire at Broussard store

A Broussard man accused of firing a shot toward a group of people at a U.S. 90 convenience store on Monday night surrendered to authorities on Tuesday.

James Linton, 52, is accused of three counts of attempted second-degree murder in the shooting, which happened about 10:20 p.m. Monday at the Shop Rite store in the 4100 block of U.S. 90, according to a news release from the Broussard Police Department.

Linton also was arrested on counts of illegal use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Investigators said Linton became involved in a verbal altercation, grabbed a revolver out of a bag in his vehicle and aimed before he ran toward the group and fired a shot, the release stated. Linton then fled the scene.

Police later located Linton’s vehicle at a Lafayette home but did not find him there, according to the release. He later surrendered to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Water heater causes Lafayette house fire

A hot water heater malfunction caused a Wednesday morning house fire in Lafayette that caused severe damage to a man’s kitchen and heavy smoke damage to his house, according to the Lafayette Fire Department.

Fire investigators ruled the fire an accident after determining it originated in the kitchen closet that housed the hot water heater, said Alton Trahan, Fire Department spokesman.

Two people were sleeping inside the home in the 900 block of St. Charles Street and awoke about 6:18 a.m. to find smoke throughout the house, Trahan said. Both people escaped unharmed.

Firefighters responded within three minutes and extinguished the blaze within 20 minutes, and investigators determined the house did not have smoke detectors, Trahan said.
