A St. Mary Parish inmate and his aunt are accused of trying to bribe a corrections officer to smuggle contraband into the jail.

Authorities arrested the inmate, 31-year-old Therold James, of Bayou Vista, and his 56-year-old aunt, Geraldine James of Berwick, on Tuesday after the officer went undercover to accept a package filled with tobacco, a cell phone and a cell phone charger and a $200 bribe from the woman, according to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Therold James had propositioned the officer to carry out the deal, after which the officer went undercover and met with Geraldine James in Bayou Vista and brought the contraband and cash to detectives, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Therold James, who’s been in jail since March 29 on drug, theft and criminal damage to property counts, was re-booked on another count of introducing contraband into a penal institution. He’s being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond.

Gerald James, who was arrested on the same count, was released on Tuesday afternoon on a $10,000 bond.
