A single-vehicle crash Sunday morning on Interstate 10 in Calcasieu Parish left one person dead and another seriously injured, State Police said.

The wreck occurred just before 7 a.m. on I-10 near PPG Drive between Westlake and Sulphur when the driver of a sedan drove onto the PPG Drive exit ramp at a high rate of speed and lost control, said Sgt. James Anderson, a State Police spokesman, in a news release.

The vehicle rotated, struck a stop sign, and continued east across PPG Drive before striking two separate bridge columns, he said.

Both the driver and passenger did not have on seat belts, and were thrown from the vehicle, Anderson said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by the Calcasieu Parish Coroner’s Office, Anderson said. The passenger was flown to a Lafayette hospital with serious injuries.

Their identities have not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Anderson said troopers believe alcohol use and excessive speed are factors that contributed to the crash. A toxicology sample was obtained from the driver for analysis.
