Authorities on Tuesday identified a Lafayette woman killed last week in what her husband called an accidental shooting as 38-year-old Sonja Starkey.

Starkey’s husband, 44-year-old Robbie Starkey, told police the two were handling a gun on Friday “when it accidentally discharged,” according to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office. The two were at a home in the 600 block of Fenetre Road near Scott at the time of the shooting.

The Sheriff’s Office has not disclosed in whose home the shooting occurred.

In a Monday news release, Robbie Starkey was identified as Sonja Starkey’s “estranged husband.”

Detectives are still investigating the shooting, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Babin said.
