Update, Saturday, 1:46 p.m.: Lafayette Police Department detectives identified the victim as Paul Robertson Jr., 64, of Lafayette, said Lafayette Police Department Cpl. Paul Mouton.
Kelly Street, its residents say, has always been a quiet neighborhood. But on Friday, a house in the 200 block became a crime scene after a woman found her neighbor shot dead in his doorway.
Police interviewed area residents, but on Friday evening were still looking for a motive in the shooting death of the 64-year-old man, said Cpl. Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police Department spokesman. The man’s body was found about 12:30 p.m. at his home.
No suspects have been identified in the killing, which left neighbors in disbelief.
“We don’t have this kind of action around here. So, I mean, it’s shocking,” said Shelia L. Davis.
Davis said that when she saw her neighbor lying in the doorway, there were flies, so she knew he was dead.
A blue sheet surrounded the man’s doorway Friday afternoon as detectives combed the crime scene for evidence.
Police had not identified the victim on Friday, pending notification of next of kin. But neighbors said they knew him as “Mr. Paul” and described him as a quiet person.
“Mr. Paul was a nice, caring man,” said Renita Prejean, who has lived in the neighborhood for three years. “He would just sit on his porch and wave to all the neighbors and kids.”
“It’s a surreal feeling,” Prejean added. “We’re all in shock. Nothing like this ever happens. We don’t even have domestic calls here, really. Our children play here.”
And on Friday afternoon, the children again were playing — only feet from the crime scene tape.
