LAFAYETTE — A Lafayette man suspected of growing high-grade marijuana for commerce was arrested Monday by local narcotics agents, who found 18 hydroponic pot plants with a street value of $32,400, officials said.
Capt. Dwayne Prejean, with the Lafayette Metro Narcotics Task Force, said Phillip Hernandez, 30, had the plants and three sophisticated growing chambers in an apartment at 210 Rural St. in Lafayette.
Hernandez was booked on counts of cultivating marijuana, possession with the intent to distribute marijuana, possessing money made from drug sales and possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, Prejean said.
“Hydroponic marijuana has a significantly higher value than commercial-grade marijuana,” Prejean said. He said regular marijuana costs $5.30 a gram, and hydroponic pot costs between $20 and $30 a gram.
Although the plants confiscated Monday were worth $32,400, if the plants had reached maturity the street value would have been $54,000, he said.
Also seized at the apartment was 27 grams of marijuana worth $540, a handgun and an uncounted stack of cash found in a safe, Prejean said.
