A Delcambre teen died Monday from injuries sustained in a March 2 crash after he refused to stop for Louisiana State Police troopers and then ran off the side of Jefferson Island Road in Iberia Parish, according to a Wednesday evening press release from state police.

Troopers had tried to stop 17-year-old Charles Reed after a traffic violation around 2:30 p.m. March 2 on Jefferson Island Road near Norris Road, Master Trooper Brooks David said in the release. Reed ignored the troopers and kept driving south before he failed to take a turn in the road and hit an embankment, David said.

The teen was not wearing a seat belt and was hospitalized with severe injuries, David said. Hospital staff told police Monday that Reed died from his injuries.

Two other teenagers in Reed's vehicle were also hospitalized with moderate to severe injuries, according to the press release. They were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.

Investigators do not know if impairment was a factor in the crash, but they did take toxicology samples for analysis, David said. They continue to investigate.
