A 70-year-old Breaux Bridge man was in stable condition at a Lafayette-area hospital Wednesday afternoon after his SUV collided with an oncoming Amtrak train at the crossing on Pinhook Road, Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

Mouton said the man received moderate injuries in the crash, which occurred at 12:48 p.m. Wednesday. Mouton said the man’s name has not been released because he has not been cited in the incident, though an investigation is ongoing.

“The male operator ran through the signals and collided with the train,” Mouton said. “There are guard arms at the intersection and to our knowledge they were down.”

No one on the passenger train was injured during the collision, he said.
