State troopers arrested a 19-year-old driver Sunday suspected of being impaired after a single-vehicle car crash that killed one passenger and injured another.
Ailayjah Derouen, of New Iberia, was driving a 2001 Buick Lesabre eastbound on La. 182 in Iberia Parish around 2 a.m. Sunday when she crossed over the westbound lane and drove off the side of the road, said Master Trooper Brooks David, a State Police spokesman.
The car struck several trees before overturning, David said.
Tracy Chatman, 46, of New Iberia, was ejected from the car and died at the scene of the crash, David said.
Derouen and another passenger, 2-year-old Kyle Derouen, suffered moderate injuries and were taken to the hospital, David said. No one in the car was wearing a seat belt.
Investigators suspect Ailayjah Derouen was impaired at the time of the crash and a toxicology sample was taken from her and sent to the State Police Crime Lab for analysis, David said.
Troopers arrested her Sunday morning after she was treated for her injuries, David said, and booked her into the Iberia Parish jail on counts of negligent homicide, first-degree vehicular negligent injuring, not wearing a seat belt, driving without a license and careless operation.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, David said.
