A woman was choked and thrown into the back seat of her Mustang on Tuesday morning by a carjacker who a short time later released the victim before fleeing in her car, police said.

Lafayette police continued Tuesday evening to search for the man, who stole the woman’s car, her purse and other items, including the victim’s cellphone, which was found off Interstate 10 near Scott, Lafayette Police Cpl. Paul Mouton said.

The victim told police a man approached her on Oakcrest Drive near Johnston Street about 10 a.m.

“He asked for a cigarette, then forced her into the vehicle by choking her and shoving her,” Mouton said. He said the man drove a short distance before letting the victim out and driving away.

The stolen car is a 2008 silver Mustang with license plate STJ855.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lafayette police or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS.

Suspects booked in Broussard burglaries

Two people accused in the burglaries of cars parked at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Cecilia School in Broussard on Monday were arrested at a residence just outside the city, where Broussard officers found goods stolen in other recent Lafayette Parish heists, officials said.

Police Chief Brannon Decou said two cars on a parking lot shared by the school and church were broken into within a two-hour span. Missing items included electronic devices, purses and credit cards.

Ashley Marter, 19, of Broussard, was booked on two counts of principal to burglary, and Nicholas Jackson, 21, of St. Martinville, on two counts of accessory to burglary.

Both were arrested Monday with the help of Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies, Decou said.

Police on Tuesday continued to look for another suspect, 19-year-old Christopher Lejeune. Decou said it was unclear where Lejeune lives.

Anyone with information on Lejeune is asked to call Broussard police at (337) 837-6259.

Police investigating death of mother

KATC-TV is reporting that police in Ville Platte are investigating what they have termed a “suspicious death” of a woman whose body was found inside her High School Drive home.

Family members told KATC the woman is 29-year-old Latoya Richard. They found her body after breaking into her home when she failed to meet her daughter as she got off the school bus, which Richard did every day. Her family said her daughter went to the home of a neighbor, who then contacted family members to try to locate Richard.

Police say they are waiting on a coroner’s report to determine the cause of death.
