A 92-year-old Lafayette man died in a crash shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 10 east of Duson, Louisiana State Police reported.
The crash occurred as Lillard Payne was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Avalanche westbound on Interstate 10 in the right lane. Payne’s vehicle struck the rear of a 2001 GMC Yukon that had been stopped because of a prior crash on the interstate, State Police said.
Payne was pronounced dead on scene by the Lafayette Parish Coroner’s Office. The driver of the Yukon, Willie Jeff, 35, of Gray, sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Lafayette General Hospital by Acadian Ambulance, State Police reported.
Both Jeff and Payne were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash, State Police said.
Impairment is not believed to have been a factor in the crash. Toxicology samples were taken from Payne and Jeff and submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, State Police said.
