Authorities are investigating how a Lafayette woman on Friday was shot dead by her estranged husband, who claimed the gun went off by accident while the pair handled the weapon.

The shooting happened about 10:40 a.m. in the 600 block of Fenetre Road, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office reported Monday.

Neither the woman nor her husband have been identified.

Investigators will not be releasing that information for at least another day while they “tie up loose ends” in the case, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. John Babin said

The shooting happened in unincorporated Lafayette Parish near Scott.

Deputies investigate New Iberia shooting

Deputies with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office are investigating a shooting that happened Monday morning on Bank Street in New Iberia, KATC-TV reported.

Someone was shot in the foot on Bank Street at 9:49 a.m. following a fight, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Ryan Turner said.

There were no life-threatening injuries reported.

Man accused of stealing license plates

A Houma man arrested on Sunday is accused of stealing license plates from parked vehicles and getting physically aggressive with people who confronted him about the thefts.

Lang Van Le, 73, 610 Woodshire St., was booked on two counts of simple battery and one count of illegal possession of stolen things in the alleged crimes, according to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office.

A deputy found two stolen license plates in Le’s possession about 12:40 a.m. Sunday after someone reported the theft in progress in a business parking lot on Lake Palourde Road, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The man and woman who reported the accused thief said he grabbed and pushed them when they confronted him about the plates, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Lee posted $1,500 bail and was released from the St. Mary Parish jail on Monday afternoon.
