Calcasieu searching for drowned man

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office continued a search Sunday at Niblett’s Bluff Park for a drowning victim who never resurfaced after he jumped in the water at a Fourth of July celebration, according to a KATC-TV report.

Shannon Godfrey, 28, of DeRidder, was at the park with family members when, during a game of kickball, the ball went in the water and Godfrey jumped in to get it. Witnesses said he went under and never came back up.

Deputies responded to the apparent drowning at the park at about 7 p.m. Saturday. The CPSO Marine Division arrived on the scene and began diving and running sonar equipment in an effort to locate Godfrey.

Divers stayed in the water until midnight but were unable to locate him. The search continued Sunday.
