A two-year-old was killed and three others were injured in a single-vehicle wreck Sunday morning in St. Landry Parish, according to the State Police.

The wreck happened shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday on La. 754 near Alton Road when a 2003 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by Shaparia Citizen of Church Point ran off the road in a curve, crashed through a ditch and up an embankment before striking several trees, said Master Trooper David Brooks, a State Police spokesman, in a news release.

A two-year-old riding in a child seat in the back of the car suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Opelousas General Hospital, Brooks said. Citizen and two other children suffered minor injuries in the crash. They were also taken to a hospital while Citizen declined treatment, according to Brooks.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, Brooks said. Troopers at the scene determined that Citizen was not impaired at the time of the wreck, but blood samples will be submitted to the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, Brooks said.
