Original story

A 30-year-old Lafayette man died early Tuesday morning after stepping in front of pickup truck on La. 343 near Ridge Road, according to State Police.

The man walked off the shoulder and into the path of a southbound 2004 Chevrolet truck driven by Samuel Yeates, 47, of Welsh, a State Police news release states. Yeates was unable to avoid the crash, police said, and struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s identity was withheld pending notification of kin. Toxicology samples were taken from the man for analysis.

Yeates submitted to a chemical breath test, which indicated he was not impaired at the time of the crash, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
