A Kaplan man died Friday of injuries sustained in a single-vehicle crash on Cheneau Road.

The driver of the vehicle, 28-year-old Samuel Johnnie, of 512 E. Third Street, was one of four people injured in the Thursday night crash before he succumbed to his injuries at an area hospital, according to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Another passenger remained hospitalized Friday with critical injuries, while the other two people in the 2011 Suzuki Equator truck were treated and released for moderate injures.

The Sheriff’s Office said the truck was traveling at a high rate of speed when it veered off the roadway, struck a ditch and landed on a levee. Three of the four passengers were not wearing seatbelts and were ejected from the vehicle.

Speed and alcohol are suspected as factors in the crash, the Sheriff’s Office said.

The crash remains under investigation.
