A 12-year-old boy has died and his twin remains hospitalized in Baton Rouge after the Tuesday train-car crash in New Iberia that killed three others, KATC-TV reported Friday.
According to Acadian Funeral Home, 12-year-old Chase Day died at Our Lady of Lake Regional Medical Center. His twin brother, who was also injured in the crash, remains hospitalized, the television station reported.
Chase and his twin, along with Steve Leblanc, 49, were critically injured and 12-year-olds Jayla Daigle and Trinity Schmidt, as well as driver Phyllis Leblanc, 70, all of New Iberia, were killed when the train slammed into Leblanc’s 2006 Ford Taurus.
The northbound car had been stopped on the tracks at the junction of La. 88 (Coteau Road) and La. 182 shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Leblanc and the girls were pronounced dead at the scene.
All four children were sixth-graders at Daspit Elementary School.
None of the 119 passengers on the train was reported injured. The train, the Sunset Limited, was traveling from Los Angeles to New Orleans.
