Two teenagers were arrested in a shooting that left a 17-year-old dead at a party in Jennings early Saturday, authorities said.

Police responded to a fight around 12:30 a.m. at a private party at the American Legion Hall on Market Street, according to a report by KATC-TV. There were reports of gunshots when police arrived.

Jawon Lennette, of Jennings, was shot in the chest and received medical attention at the scene, said police Chief Todd D’albor of the Jennings Police Department.

Lennette was taken to the Jennings American Legion Hospital where he later died, D’albor said.

Kyvonte Eaglin, 17, of Welsh, was arrested on a count of second-degree murder in the shooting. Also arrested was Jermaine Washington, 19, of Welsh, who was booked on a count of aggravated assault with a firearm.

Plaisance man arrested in sexual assault claims

A Plaisance man was arrested Sunday morning in a series of sexual assaults involving two women, Washington police said.

Officers with the Washington Police Department in St. Landry Parish were notified Saturday of multiple sexual battery incidents that occurred between midnight and 7 a.m. at the home of the two women, according to a KATC-TV report.

Ricky Rideau, 33, was arrested on two counts of sexual battery, two counts of trespassing and one count of simple burglary.

Evangeline sheriff joins search for escapee

Evangeline Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies joined the search for a 22-year-old inmate of the Southwest Louisiana Correctional Center in Basile after he escaped shortly after 5 a.m. Sunday.

Authorities say Zachary Deville was serving time on a burglary charge when he escaped.

A perimeter search was set up in the Lake Cove and Clearwater areas in Evangeline Parish where Deville was last sighted.

Deville is described as a white man, about 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs about 135 pounds. Authorities say he was wearing a prison-issued uniform at the time of the escape.

Police are asking that residents keep their homes and vehicles locked.
