An Opelousas bicyclist was killed Thursday night in St. Landry Parish after a driver struck him from behind, according to State Police.

John Rideaux, 67, was bicycling north on La. 749 around 8 p.m. when Jahvonta Zachary, 22, crashed his 2015 Hyundai Elantra into the man and his bicycle near Sunnyside Lane, police said.

Rideaux was traveling without front or rear lights on the bicycle, and was not wearing a helmet, police said.

Zachary, of Opelousas, an a passenger in his car were wearing seat belts and were not injured, police said. Zachary submitted to a chemical test and was not impaired.
