FRANKLIN — A St. Mary Parish inmate was rebooked Friday after an autopsy revealed the Bayou Vista woman he was jailed for battering died from her injuries.
Troy Benoit, 51, of Patterson, now faces a count of manslaughter in the death of Melba Royer, 55, who died from “complications from blunt force injuries that were the result of the battery,” the St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.
Investigators arrested Benoit on Feb. 18, six days after a hospital reported Royer’s broken ribs and a collapsed lung as a possible domestic battery, the Sheriff’s Office said. Benoit is accused of throwing Royer to the ground, grabbing her face and neck and repeatedly kicking her.
Royer, who was released from the hospital, was found dead in her home Feb. 27, two weeks after the beating.
Benoit has been held on a $100,000 bond since his Feb. 18 arrest on a count of domestic abuse battery and remained there Friday afternoon. No bail had been set on the manslaughter count.
