Investigators ruled an early morning fire at a Marigny Circle convenience store as arson, causing minor fire, smoke and water damage to the six-month old business at the edge of the Pontalba Place apartment complex.

Preliminary reports determined the arsonist used an ignitable liquid to spread the fire and may have experienced minor burns, Lafayette Fire Department spokesperson Alton Trahan said.

The Lafayette, Judice, Scott and Duson fire departments extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes, Trahan said. The building sustained minor fire damage to the rear exterior and attic area and minor smoke and water damage to its interior.

A Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s deputy reported the commercial fire at 5:08 a.m., just six hours after its owner said the business closed at 11 p.m., Trahan said.
