A 5-year-old Glencoe boy and his dog were killed Wednesday night after running in front of a car traveling on La. 83 in St. Mary Parish, according to State Police.

The car’s driver, 38-year-old James Hopkins III, of Baldwin, told police the boy and his dog ran out in front of him, and he was unable to avoid striking them both, police said.

The boy died at an area hospital after someone from his home — right where the crash happened — brought him there in a private vehicle, police said. It happened around 7:30 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
