A 55-year-old woman walked into traffic Sunday at mile marker 101 of Interstate 10 and was struck and killed by a vehicle, Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft said.

Mary Ann McCrery, of Lafayette, was pronounced dead at the scene, Craft said in a news release.

She was hit by a 2007 Honda CRV traveling eastbound about 5:25 a.m., according to witnesses, Craft said.

The driver of the SUV was not injured or cited in the collision, which is still under investigation.

Soldier, 22, killed by suspected drunken driver

A Fort Polk Army soldier trying to cross a state highway just south of Lake Charles was killed Sunday morning in a crash with a pickup, Louisiana State Police spokesman Sgt. James Anderson said.

Devin Lee Olmos, 22, of San Antonio, Texas, was walking on La. 385 near Link Road about 3:55 a.m. when a southbound 1999 Mazda driven by 37-year-old Marcus Devin Pettifield, of Lake Arthur, struck him, Anderson said in a news release.

Olmos was pronounced dead after being transported to a Lake Charles hospital.

An alcohol breath test indicated Pettifield was over the legal limit for driving, and he faces a count of vehicular homicide, Anderson said.

Pettifield was booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center. A toxicology sample from Olmos is being tested and results are pending.

The incident is still being investigated.
