Iberia Parish sheriff’s deputies arrested a 31-year-old man accused of holding a woman hostage inside an apartment Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities responded to an apartment complex in the 500 block of Grand Pre Boulevard about 1 p.m., after they received a call that Thomas Chevalier was holding a 40-year-old woman hostage, according a news release from the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies set up a perimeter around the apartment complex, but Chevalier tried to drive off with the victim before they managed to enter the apartment, authorities said.

They stopped Chevalier just outside the apartment complex, where he was arrested, the Sheriff’s Office said. The woman was taken to an area hospital for observation.

Chevalier, of New Iberia, was booked on outstanding warrants for home invasion, domestic abuse strangulation and violation of a protective order. Additional charges are pending, authorities said.

Sheriff: Erath shooting death not a suicide

An Erath man was booked Thursday on a count of second-degree murder in the Wednesday shooting of a woman whose death was initially reported as suicide.

Ryan Duhon, 42, was booked in the death of 37-year-old Christy Bourque, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office said in a news release Thursday afternoon.

“An autopsy found sufficient evidence which eliminated any possibility of the victim’s fatal injuries to be self-inflicted,” the release said.

Police responded to a 5 a.m. call Dec. 3 that Bourque had committed suicide but soon began investigating her death as “suspicious,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Duhon and Bourque were living together in the 16200 block of St. Elmo Road, authorities have said.
