A 48-year-old Lafayette man died in a shooting early Thursday in Lafayette, police said.
Stephen Phillips is known around Lafayette as “The General,” said Cpl. Paul Mouton, Lafayette Police Department spokesman.
Mouton said police are publicizing his nickname in effort to get more information from the public about what may have led to his killing.
Officers found Phillips in the roadway of the 300 block of Hazel Street after responding to a 1:40 a.m. report of shots fired, police said.
Phillips, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Anyone with information is asked to call Lafayette police or Crime Stoppers at (337) 232-TIPS.
