Police are investigating a Thursday afternoon shooting that left one man hospitalized after he reportedly burglarized a home in the 100 block of Webb Street in Lafayette, police said.

A Webb Street resident told officers that he fired his pistol multiple times after several men broke into his home about 3 p.m., police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.

One man was shot in the back and was found by police at an area hospital, where he remains in stable condition, Mouton said. Officers detained two other men at the hospital who are being questioned in the burglary, Mouton said.

The case remains under investigation.

Lafayette man accused in underage sex case

A Lafayette man arrested Thursday on multiple sex offenses is accused of buying clothes and electronics for two underage girls in exchange for sexual favors, police said.

Jazz Montel Chaisson, 21, was booked on one count each of computer-aided solicitation of a minor, felony carnal knowledge of a juvenile and misdemeanor carnal knowledge of a juvenile.

The mother of the girls reported Chaisson to police after finding sexually explicit text exchanges between him and the girls on cellphones he had purchased for them, Scott Police Chief Chad Leger said in a news release.

The mother brought the phones to the Lafayette Police Department, where they were searched for further evidence, Leger said.

Both girls admitted Chaisson bought them clothes and electronics in exchange for sexual favors and told investigators he once brought them to a remote location in Scott for sex, Leger said.

Chaisson remained in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on Thursday afternoon without bond.

Amelia woman linked to multiple thefts

A woman booked on theft Wednesday in Morgan City has been linked to thefts in Bayou Vista and Thibodaux, authorities said.

After Charmaine M. Hebert, 28, of Amelia, was arrested in Morgan City, police discovered the Social Security card of a woman whose wallet was snatched at Wal-Mart in Bayou Vista, said Traci Landry, St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

The Sheriff’s Office, which was investigating the Bayou Vista theft, had found evidence linking Hebert in the crime through surveillance footage and had searched the woman’s Amelia hotel room on a warrant the same day she was booked in Morgan City, Landry said.

In the hotel room, detectives found purses, wallets and credit cards with various names, including the victims of two theft cases in Thibodaux, Landry said.

Hebert remained in the Morgan City jail Thursday pending booking on a Sheriff’s Office warrant for theft, unauthorized use of an access card and two counts of illegal possession of stolen things, Landry said.

Charenton man pleads guilty to pot charge

A 46-year-old Charenton man pleaded guilty in federal court on Thursday to marijuana possession with intent to distribute, officials said.

Steven Quinn Vilcan admitted he had marijuana in July at his Charenton home, which is located on Chitimacha tribal lands near Franklin, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said.

Police searching Vilcan’s home found about 7 pounds of marijuana in a duffle bag in the closet of a spare bedroom, Finley said in a news release.

U.S. District Judge Richard Haik on Thursday did not set a sentencing date. Vilcan faces up to five years in federal prison, two years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

The FBI and the Chitimacha Tribal Police Department investigated the case prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Luke Walker.
