A pot heating scented materials and left on the stove unattended likely led to a fire in the 1900 block of Simcoe Street Saturday.

Just after midnight, firefighters arrived at the apartment complex and found heavy smoke and large flames spewing from the four-unit apartment building. The blaze was under control within 15 minutes, and two residents who were inside were able to escape with no injuries.

Investigators determined the fire originated in the kitchen from a pot with scented materials left on the stove unattended. The occupant, Calvin Andrus, was awakened by the smoke and a neighbor knocking on the door. He was able to escape, though his apartment was destroyed by the fire.

The dwelling sustained heavy fire damage in two of the apartments. The other two apartments received moderate smoke damage.
