LAFAYETTE —Firefighters trying to extinguish an early morning fire at a Ridge Road business discovered a body inside a vehicle that apparently crashed into the building.
State Police identified the victim as Sarah Leblanc, 27, of Duson, who, KATC has confirmed, is the same person who was arrested in August on a count of negligent homicide in the death of her 3-year-old daughter. The child was found inside a home in the 500 block of Acorn Drive on July 24 and an autopsy found that the child died from hypothermia and dehydration.
At 5 a.m. Friday, Leblanc was traveling east on La. 342 when she ran off the left side of the road into a ditch and then into the offices of Advanced Radiographics, according to information from State Police and the Lafayette Fire Department.
Alcohol is suspected as a contributing factor in the accident, and toxicology tests are pending, according to State Police.
Engine companies from Lafayette, Scott and Judice got the call at 5:04 a.m. about the fire at Advanced Radiographics, and quickly rang a second alarm for assistance from Broussard, Carencro and Youngsville, said Lafayette Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan.
Advanced Radiographics stores medical records, which were contained in boxes packed densely into the building and provided fuel for the fire, Lafayette Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan said.
The fire, believed caused by the impact, spread to an adjacent business, Murf’s Cabinets.
