A 4-year-old girl died in a single-vehicle crash in Rapides Parish, and State Police report that she was not properly restrained in an age-appropriate child seat.

Troopers say three other occupants in the vehicle received minor to moderate injuries. There were eight people inside the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Investigators reported that only one of the occupants was possibly restrained, but the investigation remains open.

The crash occurred about 2:20 p.m. Friday on La. 498, west of La. 1.

The 2003 Ford Expedition, driven by Marquita A. Batiste, of Alexandria, was westbound on La. 498 when she tried to pass a vehicle after entering a curve.

Troopers say Batiste lost control and went off the left side of the road before the vehicle overturned. Troopers say Batiste was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center with minor injuries, and 4-year-old Amaria Lachney was ejected during the crash.

She was transported to Rapides Regional Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Batiste was charged with reckless operation of a vehicle, negligent homicide, two counts of negligent injuring, no seat belt and four counts of no child restraints.

Routine toxicology tests are pending.
