A St. Landry Parish jury on Thursday found Dominique Jackson guilty of second-degree murder in the December 2011 death of 2-year-old Derrion Sam.
Jackson, 24, of Opelousas, will be sentenced March 5. He faces mandatory life in prison.
Sam’s mother, 23-year-old Latricia Hunt, is awaiting trial on second-degree cruelty to a juvenile, KATC-TV reported. She faces up to 40 years in prison.
The toddler died at Opelousas General Hospital on Dec. 19, 2011, a day after he had been in Jackson’s care, KATC-TV reported.
The coroner ruled that Sam died of blunt force trauma, with his autopsy revealing evidence of previous rib fractures and abdominal damage, KATC-TV reported.
Broussard shooting death under investigation
A man died at an area hospital after a Wednesday night shooting in the 400 block of Bayou Tortue Road, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
The culprit has not been found because the people involved in the incident have not been cooperating with the investigation, said Capt. Craig Stansbury, Sheriff’s Office spokesman.
“It might take a little while to sort out,” Stansbury said.
Later on Thursday, deputies arrested three men — Steven Trahan Sr., Steven Trahan Jr. and Dillion Trahan — accused of giving false statements during the investigation, Stansbury said. The three have been booked on accessory after the fact for second-degree murder.
The victim, whose name was not released Thursday, was shot once in the head around 10 p.m. during an argument between two groups of people, Stansbury said. The investigation is ongoing.

Sheriff: Man with stolen gun punches deputy
A Morgan City man arrested Wednesday in Amelia is accused of punching a St. Mary Parish deputy and threatening his life, the Sheriff’s Office said.
Melvin Sylvester, 54, of 1412 James St., became irate and punched the deputy in the forehead after he was detained following a foot chase on Grace Street, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Traci Landry said in a news release. He was also yelling and cursing and refused to identify himself, Landry said.
The deputy was trying to speak with Sylvester, who was walking along Grace Street after a recent residential burglary in the area, Landry said.
When the deputy made eye contact with Sylvester, he fled into a private yard and dropped a handgun, which had been stolen in a residential burglary on James Street in Amelia, Landry said.
Sylvester was booked on battery of an officer; illegal possession of a stolen firearm and possessing a firearm as a felon; resisting; flight from an officer; criminal trespassing; disturbing the peace; public intimidation and retaliation; and three warrants for failing to appear on charges of criminal neglect of family.
He remained in the St. Mary Parish jail Thursday afternoon. Bail was set at more than $13,000.
