The victim in a fatal Sunday afternoon shooting in Church Point has been identified as 26-year-old Donald Senegal Jr., and authorities are still searching for his killer, police said Monday afternoon.

Donald “Dino” R. Gotche Jr., 19, of Church Point, is suspected of shooting Senegal shortly before 4:30 p.m. Sunday at the corner of North Main and Sunrise streets, Police Chief Albert Venable said.

Police said other persons-of-interest were seen Sunday in a gray, four-door, older model Oldsmobile Delta 88, but no additional suspects had been released by Monday afternoon.

Senegal, a Rayne native, had recently been living in Church Point, police said.

No further details on the shooting are available and the investigation is ongoing.

Suspected bank robber arrested on tip

An anonymous tip led Lafayette Police to identify and arrest a suspect Friday in last week’s robbery of IberiaBank at 3701 Johnston Street.

Brandon Reaux, 39, of Lafayette, was booked on a count of simple robbery after someone identified him driving a vehicle in the area and reported it to Lafayette Crime Stoppers, Lafayette Police spokesman Cpl. Paul Mouton said in a news release.

Police on Jan. 27 released surveillance images of the robber, who approached a bank clerk that day and used a note to demand money. He got away with an undisclosed amount of cash, police said.

Reaux remained in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center Monday morning in lieu of $20,000 bail.

Jeanerette jail nurse booked on contraband counts

A Jeanerette nurse who works for a private healthcare company that serves the St. Mary Parish jail was arrested Friday on conspiring to bring contraband into the facility, the Sheriff’s Office said in its Monday arrest report.

Tiffany A. Sonnier, 26, of 2806 Dalbor St., was booked at 5 p.m. Friday after she admitted to the conspiracy, said Traci Landry, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.

Sonnier was also booked on counts of introducing contraband into a penal institution and possession of Adderall, a Schedule II narcotic, after deputies found the pills in her possession during the booking process, Landry said.

Sonnier had been released from jail by Monday afternoon, according to jail records.

Shed destroyed in Maurice garbage fire

A shed sustained heavy fire damage in Maurice on Monday afternoon after wind spread a trash fire throughout the structure, the Lafayette Fire Department said in a news release.

Firefighters from Lafayette, Judice, Milton, Duson and Maurice responded at 2:09 p.m. to the fire in the 7500 block of Johnston Street, Fire Department spokesman Alton Trahan said. Responders were able to keep an adjacent mobile home from catching fire, Trahan said. The shed’s owner was burning trash in the structure, which had an open wall on one side where the wind entered and spread the fire.

Johnston Street traffic was reduced to one lane for more than an hour while the fire, which was ruled accidental, was contained, Trahan said.
