OPELOUSAS — Several law enforcement agencies were working late Thursday to capture an inmate who escaped in Opelousas.
Few details were available as the search got underway, but the shackled inmate escaped from a transport van stopped at a gas station near the Judson Walsh exit on Interstate 49, St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Clay Higgins said.
Authorities were not releasing the inmate’s name to avoid alerting family or acquaintances willing to harbor the man. The inmate was in jail for minor felony charges, Higgins said, although the details of those charges were not available Thursday evening.
The inmate was in the custody of another parish outside of St. Landry, although law enforcement officials were giving conflicting accounts Thursday afternoon about who was responsible for his transport when he escaped.
