A Lafayette Parish inmate fled from his work crew assignment for about 30 minutes Thursday afternoon before deputies found him about a half-mile away, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office reported.

The inmate, 21-year-old Wayne Angelle, has been in jail since April 30 on six counts of simple burglary and in lieu of $60,000 bail, according to booking records.

Angelle was working in the area of Dorset Avenue near Pinhook Road and the Southeast Evangeline Thruway, when he escaped about 2 p.m., said Capt. John Babin, Sheriff’s Office spokesman. Deputies found Angelle nearby in the Refinery Street area around 2:30 p.m.

Deputies are still investigating Angelle’s escape before potentially arresting him on new charges, Babin said.
