ABBEVILLE — Skeletal remains found in a sealed-off chimney during renovations earlier this year at The Bank of Abbeville and Trust have been identified as a man who went missing in 1984, police said Tuesday.

The remains, identified through DNA by a forensic lab at LSU, are those of Joseph W. Schexnider, who was last seen just before he was to appear in court on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, police said.

Schexnider’s mother told investigators that he was 26 at the time he was last seen by family members and would have been 49 today, police said.

The mother asked police to withhold her identity.
