In a strange collision of circumstances, firefighters responding to a house fire in Abbeville found themselves just yards away from a high-speed chase that passed right by them early Saturday morning, KATC reported.

In the first incident, a historic house in Abbeville at 400 Park Avenue burst into flames at about 3 a.m., said State Fire Marshal Butch Browning.

But as firefighters were occupied extinguishing the flames, a man who had been fleeing police officers in Maurice sped past the fire, ran over a water hose, slammed into a parked car and then crashed into a brick building on Park Avenue just moments later, according to the Maurice Police Department.

That man had been fleeing from a Maurice officer ever since the officer tried to pull him over for speeding on La. 167, KATC reported. Abbeville officers also joined in the pursuit.

The man, whose identity was not released, was taken to Abbeville General Hospital for his injuries. No other injuries were reported, and it wasn’t clear what charges the man would face.

The house fire was extinguished shortly afterward. Officials traced the fire’s likely origin to an air conditioning closet, Browning said. Though they have not yet determined the cause, firefighters don’t suspect any wrongdoing.
