A Cottonport man named a suspect in the Sept. 23 attack and carjacking of a University of Louisiana at Lafayette student was booked Saturday on an unrelated charge into the Avoyelles Parish Prison, authorities said..

Two warrants were issued out of Lafayette Tuesday for 36-year-old Eric C. Dupas, who is accused of carjacking and second-degree kidnapping in the incident on Oak Crest Drive, said Cpl. Paul Mouton, a spokesman for the Lafayette Police Department.

Authorities connected Dupas to the crime based on evidence recovered inside the woman’s vehicle, which was found last week in Cottonport, Mouton said.

Dupas is accused of choking the woman and forcing her into the backseat of her 2008 Mustang about 7 a.m. that Tuesday, then releasing her a short time later and fleeing in her car, Mouton said.

The woman’s purse and other items were stolen, including her phone, which was found off Interstate 10 near Scott on the day of the crime, Mouton said.

Man gets life sentence in slaying of 4-year-old

The New Iberia man convicted of the first-degree murder of a 4-year-old girl will serve life in prison without probation or parole, KATC-TV reported.

Jamal Charles was convicted Sept. 15 of killing the girl and injuring her 3-year-old brother, for which he also received a 40-year sentence for second-degree cruelty to juveniles.

Investigators say in January 2011, Charles put the victim and her 3-year-old brother, who suffered burns, in a bathtub filled with 180-degree water. Charles also is accused of beating the girl with a hammer.

Forensic pathologist Christopher Tape said during the trial that the child was severely burned from the waist down and had injuries from blunt-force trauma on her scalp, spine, heart, lungs and other parts of her body, KATC-TV reported.

Tape said while some of the injuries were hours old, others had been there for days.

Kaplan man pleads not guilty in death of cyclist

The Kaplan man charged with negligent homicide in the July 7 death of Youngsville cyclist Lon Lomas pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Lafayette, KATC-TV reported.

Fitzpatrick Doucette’s attorney submitted a written plea of not guilty before the court Tuesday, according to the Lafayette Parish Clerk of Court’s Office.

Doucette, 42, is due back in court Dec. 11 for a pretrial hearing.

Lomas, 30, was killed while riding his bicycle along La. 92 near Mermentau Road sometime after 7 a.m. on July 7. His body was found hours later in a ditch. The coroner determined that the cause of death was drowning.

Doucette was arrested two weeks after authorities found Lomas’ body.

Traffic stops lead to narcotics arrests

Two traffic stops Monday in Crowley led to two narcotics arrests.

Officers arrested 28-year-old Jeremy Williams, of Rayne, who was apprehended with the help of a police dog in an abandoned residence after he fled a traffic stop on West Northern Avenue, Crowley Police Chief K.P. Gibson said. Williams had two pounds of marijuana in his vehicle, Gibson said.

Williams also is accused of driving his vehicle into the front porch and fence of a home before running from the scene, Gibson said. Williams will be booked on felony possession of marijuana, criminal damage to property, aggravated flight from an officer and having monies derived from drug proceeds.

Also arrested was 48-year-old Carlos Hubbard, of Crowley, who dropped a bag of crack cocaine on the ground during a traffic stop on Western Avenue, Gibson said. Hubbard was booked on possession of crack cocaine.
