A police officer fired shots at, but did not hit, a man suspected of robbing two women at gunpoint Thursday after police found him with a pistol a few streets from the scene, Lafayette police said in a news release.
Javon Alexander, 23, of Lafayette, wielded a gun as he demanded money from two women in a vehicle in the 100 block of Bachert Street around 7:30 p.m., and then ran away, police said.
About two hours later, police responded to a report of shots fired at the intersection of 8th Street and East Foch Street. An officer conducting a foot patrol of the area found Alexander holding a pistol.
Alexander did not comply with multiple verbal commands given by the officer, police said. The officer then fired two shots, which did not strike Alexander.
Investigators determined Alexander was the suspect in the Bachert Street robbery during questioning. He was booked on counts of armed robbery and felon in possession of a firearm.
The officer who fired the shots has been placed on paid administrative leave and will be interviewed later, police said.
