Three booked on drug counts after traffic stop

BROUSSARD — A Morgan City man who was carrying a large package of marijuana, cash and other drugs was arrested Sunday as he attempted to flee from police during a traffic stop, according to the Broussard Police Department, which said several bystanders stepped in to help capture the suspect.

Police stopped Gentry Dugas, 34, on a traffic violation in the 5600 block of U.S. 90 and saw a package and smelled marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, Police Chief Brannon Decou said in a news release.

Dugas ran from the officer when confronted about the package and marijuana odor, but the officer soon captured him with the help of several drivers who stopped to help, Decou said.

The officer found 106.6 grams of marijuana in the car — with a street value estimated at $1,600 — along with five Alprazolam pills, two ounces of Promethazine and codeine, about $1,300 in cash and a digital scale and plastic baggies, Decou said.

Dugas was booked on possession with intent to distribute Schedule I drugs, possession of Schedule II and IV drugs, monies derived from drug sales, drug paraphernalia possession, resisting, speeding and following too close, and an outstanding warrants for flight from an officer, following too close and expired driver’s license.

Another two people in the car with Dugas were also arrested.
