A Breaux Bridge man accused of driving through a parking lot and crashing into a fence with a St. Martin Parish deputy hanging onto his driver’s side door is accused of attempted manslaughter in the incident.

The Breaux Bridge Police Department early Tuesday arrested Donald Clement Jr., 22, on operating a vehicle while intoxicated and several traffic violations before State Police joined the investigation and secured a warrant for manslaughter and resisting an officer with force, according to State Police. The St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office requested State Police investigate the incident.

Authorities said the deputy approached Clement’s vehicle while investigating suspected narcotic activity, State Police said.

When the deputy identified himself, Clement drove about 500 feet with the deputy hanging onto his driver’s side door before crashing into a fence and fleeing on foot, State Police said. The deputy was hospitalized with severe injuries.

The encounter happened shortly after 12 a.m. on Tuesday.
