Authorities captured two escaped inmates out of St. Martin Parish at a Houston hotel Thursday afternoon, according to a news release.

Robert Lee Chatman III, 25, of St. Martinville, and Andre Gilbert, 31, of Homer, both were reported missing from the Breaux Bridge substation during a routine headcount early Thursday morning, the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office said.

Both were serving sentences on simple burglary charges. Each will now face an added count of simple escape, the release said.

Authorities also arrested Chatman’s girlfriend, Amanda Champagne, 20, on one count of aiding and assisting in an escape, the release said.

All three were arrested shortly after 3:30 p.m. with the direct assistance of the U.S. Marshal’s Violent Offender Task Force from Lafayette and Houston.

Extradition proceedings will be initiated, the release said.

Lafayette sets DWI checkpoint

LAFAYETTE — Authorities will conduct a sobriety checkpoint between the hours of 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. Saturday somewhere within Lafayette city limits, according to a news release.

The purpose of the checkpoint is to target impaired drivers under the influence of alcohol or any other dangerous substance, the release said.
