The body of a 71-year-old Rayne woman reported missing Tuesday night was found Wednesday in a field near Crowley, according to the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities believe Evelyn Leger died of natural causes, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release. Her body was found about 11 a.m. about 200 yards from her 1994 Buick Regal in a field off Maraist Road.

Investigators believe Leger became confused while driving and drove into the field, then became stuck when she tried to turn around, the release states. Police believe Leger began walking for help but died on the way.

Leger had last been seen leaving her home in the 200 block of David Neil Road near Rayne to do some business in Crowley.

Family members reported her missing on Tuesday night.

Bail denied in store clerk slaying case

A state district judge has denied bail for a 17-year-old accused in the slaying of a convenience store clerk, KATC-TV reported.

Devante Lemon, of Opelousas, was booked on first-degree murder in the shooting death of store clerk Waled Alqohaif.

Judge Alonzo Harris denied bail for Lemon on Wednesday, saying the teen poses a flight risk.

Also booked in the slaying was Jeffery Fisher, 27, of Lafayette.

Alqohaif, 29, was found dead Jan. 6 behind the counter of an Opelousas store in the 600 block of South Railroad Avenue.

According to documents obtained by KATC, Lemon told investigators he was in the store to buy Now and Later candy, and while he was paying, Fisher walked in dressed in black, brandishing a firearm and telling the clerk not to move. Lemon said he became scared and started to back up to the door when Fisher shot the clerk.

Lemon has no previous criminal history.

Fisher, who was arrested in Lafayette, is a convicted felon, with a criminal history that includes aggravated assault, aggravated battery and cruelty to children.
