A Duson man faces one count each of manslaughter and aggravated battery in a weekend shooting that left one man dead and another hospitalized.

Perry Alleman, 49, confessed to shooting 49-year-old Todd Lemaire late Saturday after the two argued at Alleman’s home, 818 Third St., according to the affidavit for his arrest.

Alleman arrived home that night to find Lemaire in the bathroom with a woman who was bathing. Lemaire and the woman were both friends of Alleman’s, but Lemaire’s “presence (at the home that night) was unwanted,” according to the affidavit.

When Alleman asked him to leave, Lemaire reportedly became irate and aggressive, repeatedly entering and exiting the home while advancing toward Alleman.

An unnamed 23-year-old man also was at the home that night. As he tried to intervene, Alleman fired a single shot that tore through the 23-year-old’s hand and fatally wounded Lemaire in the chest, according to the affidavit.

Alleman remains in the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on $100,000 bail.

St. Martinville man killed; kids unharmed

A St. Martinville man was killed over the weekend in a shooting at his Madison Street duplex — with his children and their mother in the house — after a brief struggle with his assailant, officials said.

Casey Alexander, in his mid-20s, was pronounced dead at a hospital, St. Martinville Chief of Police Calder Hebert said Monday.

Hebert said police were called about midnight Saturday and found Alexander on the floor inside the house.

Alexander’s three young children were unhurt, Hebert said, and their mother suffered a minor wound to one of her legs. The mother, who was not identified, was treated and released from a hospital, he said.

“It’s still a very active investigation,” Hebert said. “There appeared to be a struggle in the house.”

Hebert said Monday morning that there was no suspect, and detectives were gathering names of people Alexander associated with.

Boater’s body found in Intracoastal Waterway

A 38-year-old man from Houma who was in a small boat with his father Sunday drowned after the aluminum skiff overturned and onlookers were able to pluck only the father from the water, state wildlife officials said.

Wallace Bailey Jr.’s body was found about 6:30 a.m. Monday in the Intracoastal Waterway in St. Mary Parish, said Adam Einck, spokesman for Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, which with St. Mary Parish Sheriff’s Office personnel searched for more than 20 hours.

Bailey was operating a small skiff that had a hand-tiller steering motor when the boat crossed another boat’s wake and capsized. People who witnessed the accident pulled the victim’s father, Wallace Bailey Sr., 64, of Morgan City, from the water but were unable to grab the son, who sank and did not resurface, Einck said. Neither man wore a life preserver.

The accident occurred in the Intracoastal Waterway near its intersection with Bayou Boeuf, he said.

Wildlife and Fisheries agents, who will investigate the incident, began the search about 9 a.m. Sunday and were accompanied by Sheriff’s Office deputies.
