Lafayette man held in fatal shooting

LAFAYETTE — A 38-year-old Lafayette man was arrested Sunday in the early morning shooting death of another man in the 100 block of Northern Avenue, police said in a news release.

Jonathon Troy Alfred shot and killed a 36-year-old Lafayette man during an argument that occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday, police said in the release.

During the argument, Alfred pulled out a handgun and fired two shots at the victim, who has not been identified, striking him twice in the chest, police said.

The victim also was armed and returned fire, but missed, police said.

The victim died at the scene, police said.

Police booked Alfred into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on one count of second-degree murder.

Victim of Saturday shooting identified

LAFAYETTE — A man found dead from a single gunshot wound inside a vehicle near Simcoe Street at University Avenue on Saturday afternoon has been identified as 49-year-old Michael Davis, according to the Lafayette Police Department.

Davis had been involved in a dispute with a woman, police said, and they believe he fired at least two shots into a vehicle the woman was driving.

Police said Davis had been chasing the woman in a vehicle.

Officers found Davis after his vehicle veered off University Avenue and struck a tree next to a building at the intersection at about 4 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The woman suffered minor injuries during the incident.

Investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the disturbance and who fired the shot that killed Davis, according to a police news release issued Sunday.

Tire failure eyed in fatal SUV crash

ST. LANDRY PARISH — A 46-year-old Morgan City man died Monday after he was thrown from his sport utility vehicle during a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 49 in St. Landry Parish, State Police said in a news release.

The crash occurred about 9 a.m. when a tire on Daniel Turpin’s 1995 Nissan SUV apparently failed, causing him to run off the right side of the road, State Police said.

Turpin’s vehicle flipped while traveling down the embankment, State Police said. He was not wearing a seat belt and was thrown from the vehicle, State Police said.

Turpin was pronounced dead at a local hospital, State Police said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Gueydan man, 20, dies in truck crash

VERMILION PARISH — A 20-year-old Gueydan man died Sunday afternoon in a single-vehicle crash on La. 14 near La. 717, State Police said in a news release.

Kelian Spell was driving a 1996 Chevrolet truck west on La. 14 when, for unknown reasons, he veered to the right, then back to the left and ran off the road into a ditch, State Police said.

Spell was thrown from his vehicle after it flipped in the ditch, State Police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Vermilion Parish Coroner, State Police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
