A Lafayette woman was convicted by a federal jury this week for taking gift cards from U.S. mail, officials said.

Crystal S. Boutte, 41, was found guilty after a three-day trial of stealing Wal-Mart gift cards when she worked for the U.S. Postal Service, U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley said.

The four gift cards Boutte stole were worth a total of $275. She faces up to five years in prison, three years supervised release and a fine up to $250,000.

“Ms. Boutte was a postal employee who took advantage of and abused her position,” Finley said in a news release. “Private citizens should not have to worry about their mail being stolen by those entrusted to deliver it.”

The U.S. Postal Service and the Office of Inspector General investigated the case prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Howard C. Parker.

Man arrested after high-speed chase

A 31-year-old New Iberia man was hospitalized then arrested Thursday night after a high-speed chase with police and a crash that also injured passengers in other vehicles, officials said.

Capt. Ryan Turner, of the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office, said Bernard Curtis crashed into two vehicles at the intersection of Jefferson Terrace Boulevard and East Main Street, about a mile from where he tried to speed away from police.

After crashing, Turner said, Curtis was arrested after a brief foot pursuit. He was treated for injuries at a local hospital. The occupants of the vehicle police say Curtis hit were treated for minor to moderate injuries.

Curtis was booked on one count each of aggravated flight from an officer, negligent injury, possession of marijuana, driving without a taillight, running a red light, no driver’s license, driving 81 mph in a 35 mph zone, improper lane change and three counts of resisting an officer.
