A 49-year-old New Iberia man has died from his injuries after a passenger train crash into the stalled car he was riding in Tuesday, the fifth person to die following the crash.
Stephen Leblanc was pronounced dead on Saturday, Louisiana State Police reported late Sunday, leaving a 12-year-old boy as the only survivor of the six occupants of the 2006 Ford Taurus — all of whom are from New Iberia — that was hit by an Amtrak train as the car sat stopped on the tracks shortly before 6 p.m. Tuesday at the junction of La. 88 (Coteau Road) and La. 182.
The car’s driver, 70-year-old Phyllis Leblanc, and 12-year-olds Jayla Daigle and Trinity Schmidt were pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck. Twelve-year-old Chase Day died on Friday, State Police said. KATC-TV reported Friday that Day’s brother, who was also in the car, remained hospitalized and is now the sole survivor of the wreck. All four children were sixth-graders at Daspit Elementary School.
